Description Online Artist Portfolios: Steve Milligan, Technology Associate from the Maine Arts Commission will be conducting a workshop centered around Online Artist Portfolios. Steve has over 10 years of experience in web design, usability, web standards and trends. The workshop will familiarize attendees with common web terms and theories. Although the workshop will not delve into the technical nuts and bolts of web development, it will provide a firm understanding of successful web design strategies through visual examples. Attendees will leave the workshop, feeling confident and prepared to speak intelligibly with a designer to produce an effective, visually appealing portfolio website. The question and answer segment at the end will be extremely valuable and attendees are encouraged to participate openly. Those who wish, may bring with them, examples of their existing, or proposed websites for critiques. $5 at the door, FCA members free

PORT Teen Center

Thanks to the generosity of LL Bean, Inc. and in honor of their 100th anniversary, Bean's has donated 100 beautiful canoe paddles to the PORT Teen Center to be featured in the 4th Annual charity fund raiser. As many of you know, for the last three years local teens and adults have painted chairs, porch rockers, stools and a few other fabulous items which were then auctioned off on the last Sunday in March at a gala held at Freeport Community Center. More than $24,000 has been raised through teen industry and adult efforts! This year we will depart slightly from chairs to beautiful, functional and artistic wooden canoe paddles that LL Bean has already donated for this community event.

You may ask yourself...."Haven't I always wanted to try and paint something for the teens?" or "it looks like so much fun!"...well this is your chance! Or...I have participated before and can't wait to create again this year!!!!!

We are creating a list of interested teens (grade 7 and up) and adults (no age limit). Paint by yourself or as a team, talent is welcome but emerging artists are encouraged to join in too. If you would like to be on the list to receive more information about this wonderful opportunity, please reply directly to me. We will be sending out more details mid-September and will be looking for commitments by October 1.

Just so you know, painters and sculptors welcome! Yes, this year we will allow 25 paddles to be be treated as strictly art, sculpture, bedazzled, fiber arts, wrought iron, beaded, crafted)...we will provide paint and poly too. Final products are not due until March 1, 2012.

Save the date for our 4th Chain Stitch Event!

Saturday, October 15th from 12-4, Freeport Community Center

I hope everyone had a wonderful summer! I'm putting together plans for this years community service knitting event and am hoping you can join us. It will be on Saturday, October 15th from 12-4 at the Freeport Community Center (downstairs meeting room). The collection baskets will be out starting October 1st, so if anyone has pieces ready before then please let me know and I'll use them in the display with the baskets. Hopefully it will motivate others to join us and create!

As the date approaches I will send out a more formal email and confirm the details, but in the meantime save the date, spread the word and start knitting!

Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions or ideas for the event.

At the time, over four years ago, when the Freeport Town Council recognized our 5.0l(c)3 organization as the official representative of the local arts community. we may have overlooked the significance of this designation. As a membership nonprofit, though, it is a Big Deal because it promises empowerment and compels participation.

In this fourth year of Freeport Creative Arts, let us celebrate a few of our major accomplishments:

• Attainment of IRS nonprofit status
• Three significant juried art shows (Bruce Brown and June Fitzpatrick)
• In partnership with the Town of Freeport, receipt of an Artists In Maine Communities Grant from the Maine Arts Commission which paid 15 artists for their work
• Three annual Sidewalk Shows
• The Chain Stitch Event three years in a row through which we donated warmth and good will to Freeport Community Services (fourth scheduled for October 15)
• Numerous other shows and events
• Development of a new logo and dedicated website for Freeport Creative Arts members
• Cooperative work with the Freeport Economic Development Corporation, the Town of Freeport and FreeportUSA, including a link to their websites

Freeport Creative Arts offers an almost unlimited forum for all arts and artists in our community – all media and all makers and performers of art. Your involvement in the group gives you a voice in the creation and expression of the art spirit of our unique place. You are eligible for Individual Regular membership if you live in Freeport, Pownal and Durham and for Individual Associate membership if you live outside the three towns. We welcome Supporters and Friends because you appreciate and collect art as you connect with artists. Your engagement affirms the value of our role in the broader community, for you recognize that artists create art not only for themselves but also for its enduring spiritual and nourishing contributions to our society. Membership levels for performing arts groups will be announced shortly.

We recognize the continuing economic issues and will not raise the annual membership rate, which remains at $35, effective August 1, 2011-July 31, 2012. We also offer a special early registration rate for the upcoming juried show and are working on negotiating other special rates for members. Forms for both Membership and Early Registration for the upcoming juried show, along with a pre-addressed envelope, are enclosed.

Because Freeport Creative Arts is an entirely voluntary organization, membership begins but does not end your involvement in our group. It is that important first step. Thank you for giving this appeal your thoughtful consideration.

If you have already sent in your work, ignore this notice. If not, please submit by Jan 16 in order to be considered.
To answer a few questions that have arisen-
Artists residing in Freeport will be considered first, artists from other towns may submit works.
Total size of the work is 10x10 ONLY. Work must be ready to hang for display at the show.

If your submission is chosen, you will receive an email stating when to bring the work in for judging by our panel of lodging owners/operators. Please don't bring any works in before receiving the email.

You own the copyright to your work. Any photos sent to me will be deleted once the process of judging is over.

Flavors of Freeport CALL FOR ARTISTS

I would like to extend this invitation to you to submit a work of yours for show and sale at the event listed below. If you are interested, please read the following call and submit a digital image by the time frame mentioned.

The Destination Freeport Committee invites Freeport artists to participate in a juried exhibit of work at the Flavors of Freeport Event – Friday to Sunday, March 25-27, 2011. Work should be 10"x10", framed and wire-ready to hang – all original media created in the last two years are welcome – painting, collage, hand pulled prints, drawings, photos. No Giclee prints. The jurors are Freeport lodging owners. To be initially invited, please send one digital image of your work along with your name, address, phone contact, email address and website, if you have one. Send it to info@whitecedarinn.com. Images should be sent by January 16, 2011. (More than one image may be submitted, please send in separate emails!)

You will receive an invitation with the time and place to bring the piece to be judged, in person, by January 17. You will be notified if your work is chosen or not. If your piece is accepted for the show, you will need to pick it up after it has been photographed for publicity purposes. If it is not chosen, you will be notified when and where to pick it up. All work exhibited at the show will sell for $200. $125 will go to the artist and $75 will be retained for the charities being supported by the event. FMI: info@whitecedarinn.com

Please note that this is an invitation to participate in a 10x10 show & sale, the weekend of the Flavors of Freeport Event – Friday to Sunday, March 25-27, 2011. This show & sale will benefit the artists and the charities - Freeport Community Services and Freeport Habitat for Humanity. It will be promoted by the Flavors of Freeport Committee (a sub committee of Destination Freeport, a group of lodging businesses that promote tourism in Freeport). It is a fun event and is well promoted!

History

: The Flavors of Freeport is an annual event taking place in late winter designed to showcase the ‘flavors’ of Freeport. In past years there have been a food & wine tasting, music, art and other local events. This year will have 2 food events, the Chef’s Signature Series on Friday night and the Celebrity Server lunch on Saturday. The art work will be displayed until sold at both events. Each year we give a donation to the selected charities.

I will delete all digital images sent to me once the selection process has taken place if your work is not selected. If selected, the images will be displayed on the Flavors of Freeport website to build excitement for the show & sale. We will ask for a brief bio to accompany the chosen works shown on the website.
